School Streets Trial
In partnership with West Sussex Council Buckingham Park Primary has been chosen as one of several schools to trial the School Streets initiative.
The overarching aim of this partnership is to encourage a healthier lifestyle and the use of active travel to get to and from school for families and lead to a better environment for everyone.
- To reduce car journeys to the school gate.
- To improve safety and accessibility for vulnerable road users.
- To improve air quality around the school.
- To promote active travel modes; walking, cycling, and wheeling.
- To promote a healthy environment.
We are currently at the initial stages of the trial and we are gathering information to support the development of a plan. We will keep you updated with progress.

What are School Streets?
A School Street is a road outside a school with a temporary restriction on motorised traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times. The restriction applies to school traffic and through traffic. The result is a safer, healthier and pleasant environment for everyone.
School Street schemes offer a proactive solution for school communities to tackle air pollution, poor health and road danger reduction. A School Street scheme will encourage a healthier lifestyle and active travel to school for families and lead to a better environment for everyone.
Why: It’s safer for your children and their friends. Reduces road danger, creates a cleaner environment. Encourages active travel leading to better mental and physical health.
How : Local authorities have powers to use traffic management orders to turn a street into a pedestrian and cycle zone. This creates a School Street.
