Continuous Provision
Using a Continuous Provision approach means that resources are always available within the classroom for children to access independently. Children will be taught subjects during whole class carpet sessions and then teachers will work with children in small groups on a related learning task. While this group works with their teacher, the other children will access the Continuous Provision. The resources which children can access stays consistent for long periods of time to enable children to carefully plan their own learning experiences. This approach inspires children to consolidate their skills and understanding and creates resilient learners who motivate themselves to take on learning challenges.
Our Aims
- To encourage positive attitudes to learning
- To provide plenty of opportunities for children to assess and manage a task and consider any risks they might need to take
- To give children the responsibility to look after their own learning environment to ensure it is a calm, safe and happy place to learn in
- To give children ownership of their learning
- It gives children many opportunities to work closely with their teacher in a small group. This enables the teacher to support and challenge children on an individual basis.
- To give children opportunities to build on previous skills and knowledge and revisit learning
- To promote self-regulation skills
- To have a positive impact on wellbeing of both pupils and teachers
Some subject areas require discrete teaching- these include: phonics, Literacy skills, Mathematics and Foundation Subject areas. However, we recognise that all these subjects can be enhanced through Continuous Provision. This approach ensures skills can be revisited and practiced throughout the year, helping children to remember these skills and be competent learners.
Our Learning Environment
- A writing area with a variety of resources for children to choose from
- A maths area with resources and equipment for children to explore and extend their understanding
- A block construction area with irresistible, quality building materials
- A role play area- often linked to something from our local area. Eg. Teddy’s Café in Shoreham
- An art and design area for children to continue their Foundation Subject learning using a wide range of tools and materials and revisit the skills they’ve learnt
- A reading area full of high-quality texts which have been carefully selected to engage children and extend their vocabulary
- An enquiry area which changes with our history and geography topics
All areas are clearly labelled some with words and others with pictures this ensures children can be independent when tidying and when selecting resources they want to use.
