Parent Forum
The second Parent Forum meeting took place last week and having gathered the views of parents and carers it has been agreed that as a healthy school we will now be offering popcorn at film nights as an alternative to sweets.
Please also be reminded that it is school policy not to give out sweets and cakes to the class for children’s birthdays so please do not send them into school.
We are planning to set up ‘Birthday baking’ sessions each week so that all the children who have a birthday will bake during the week of their birthday.
Thank you to Mrs Wade (mother of Scarlet) who has volunteered as the class rep for Year 3 Owl Class. If you still do not know who your rep is they will soon be listed on the website and the notice boards.
Planning, Preparation and Assessment
Through the Forum it has come to our attention that some parents/ carers are unaware that all teachers are legally entitled to 10% remission from their teaching time for planning, preparation and assessment. We refer to this as PPA time. This amounts to approximately 2 hours per week for a full time teacher. In school each teacher is released at the same time each week and in KS1 and Reception classes this is covered by Miss Wade and in KS2 this is covered by swimming, French and RE which are taught by specialist teachers.
We endeavour to keep to the same routine each week for the benefit of the children however there are occasions when changes have to be made. Newly qualified teachers are also entitled to an additional 10% off timetable during their first year of their induction. They spend this time observing good practice in other classrooms, receiving training and working with mentors.
Early Bird Breakfast Club
Early Birds breakfast club is run by Ms Loom and aims to provide childcare for children who attend full time from Reception to Year 6.
All children will be offered a breakfast which includes a number of healthy options such as fruit, cereal, toast, crumpets, porridge milk and juice. Breakfast is a sociable time with small groups of children sitting together, developing social skills and which encourages a calm start to the day.
The club runs from 8.00 until 8.50 Monday to Friday in term time only.
(Excluding INSET days).
Activities on offer at breakfast club include – drawing, Lego, construction, Wii, and reading.
The cost per session is £2.00 and payment needs to be made prior to the session.
If you would like to book in please see the office staff.
Uniform
We would like to remind parents of the school uniform policy which is the responsibility of the governing body and is available to view on the school website. Can we remind parents that black jeans and trainers are not school uniform. Please will all parents comply with our policy.
Thank you to all parents who are now sending in the correct PE kit to comply with the National Curriculum requirements and Healthy Schools.
Chinese New Year Celebrations
On Saturday 6th February there will be Chinese New Year celebrations at Hove Town Hall. From 12 noon until 5pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Mr Aylward and Mrs Davies will be promoting our school and its interest in developing links with China through our curriculum. There will be Chinese dancing, singing, activities for all the family as well as food tastings. This event would be of particular value to our Year 3 pupils at the moment but all families are invited.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Phoebe Addison in Skylarks who brought her 2009 season with Brighton Swimming Club to a triumphant close.
Although Phoebe has only just started competitive swimming, she won six gold medals in her individual events and was named overall champion of the nine year old group. We are all very proud of her.
All staff have now received training on the text messaging service so you may now receive text messages from class teachers reminding you of events, requesting help with a project or delivering good news.
We have recently had a very poor response from parents who are requested to return consent forms for trips and we have had to send out more. So we have decided to send parents a text when a letter about a trip goes home so that you can ask your child or check in their bags. Letters will now available to download from the school website.
The governors would like the school to try to cut down on the amount of paper we use by emailing newsletters wherever possible.
If you would prefer to receive your newsletter electronically please email Mrs Mockford, our office manager at
Please would parents and carers let the office staff know if you are collecting your child after school and they are missing a club that they would normally attend. We need you to do this for safeguarding purposes.
I have been a parent governor at Buckingham Park Primary since my children joined the school last year – both my daughters are in Year 4. I work in public affairs for the environment charity the Woodland Trust and was previously a journalist. I am particularly keen to see good two-way communication between the school and parents and I am also interested in the development of the school’s outdoor environment, its work on becoming a ‘healthy school’ and ways in which the school’s environmental impact can be reduced.
I sit on the School Travel Plan group and the Quality and Standards Committee. Diane Millis

Each week we celebrate children’s achievements in assembly. Children receive a gold leaf which is placed on our achievement tree for the term and a certificate to take home.
